Philosopher and economist Adam Smith is to become the first Scotsman to appear on a Bank of England banknote.
His image will feature on a new £20 note to be issued from next spring, Bank of England governor Mervyn King said during the annual Adam Smith lecture at St Bryce's Kirk in Kirkcaldy - the birthplace of Adam Smith.
Smith, who died in 1790 and is regarded as one of the fathers of modern economics, will join William Shakespeare, Isaac Newton, George Stephenson and Florence Nightingale among famous figures who have appeared on an English note.
