UK TRADE & INVESTMENT BACKS FIRST UK BIO-ENTREPRENEUR SCHOOL

Thirty fully-funded places are on offer to bio-scientists and technologists from across the UK who want to build their business acumen, launch a new product or service or develop their senior management skills. Applicants should submit their details by 26 January to be considered in the initial selection and UK Trade & Investment in the North East is urging local people to apply. UK Trade & Investment East Midlands is to part-sponsor the UK's first Bio-Entrepreneur School to bring an international dimension to the programme which will run in Nottingham from 26 to 28 February 2007.

The pilot School, which is funded by East Midlands Development Agency ( emda ) with support from BioCity Nottingham has been developed and will be delivered by QED Consulting. This is in response to the growing interest in the commercialisation of bio-scientific ideas in an increasingly competitive global market.

Dr Ian Barr, International Trade Adviser, based in Nottinghamshire, explained why UK Trade & Investment is supporting the event:

"The East Midlands has a thriving, internationally recognised science and technology base. It's important for the region that companies developing novel technologies and innovative products market these successfully to gain the maximum benefit from their inventions and creativity.

"Through its global network of advisers and support schemes such as Passport to Export, UK Trade & Investment can help bio-entrepreneurs identify and exploit opportunities abroad, particularly for companies new to exporting."

QED Consulting is working closely with BioCity Nottingham to create a lively programme of speakers and workshops. Director of Enterprise Martijn Mugge said: "We are delighted to welcome UKTI as supporters of the School. They will be with us to talk to the delegates on aspects of internationalising bio-scientific ideas and will also be able to network people into relevant government support."

A recent recipient of UKTI Passport to Export advice is Food and Drug Analytical Services ( FDAS ), based in Nottingham's BioCity. They recently won a contract from an Irish company after taking part in UK Trade & Investment's Passport to Export scheme and attending an export event in Ireland.

Trevor Ray, FDAS Chief Executive said;

"We were delighted to learn that UKTI offer financial support as part of their market visits, so we were able to go out meet potential customers in Ireland and have help with detailed market research."

Anyone interested in joining the School should visit http://www.bioentrepreneur.co.uk for detailed information. The initial deadline for applications is Friday, 26 January 2007.
